Riviera French Café Westfarms Mall

West Hartford, CT 1,254 sq. ft.

  • The Architecture of Fast-Casual Elegance

The challenge for Riviera French Café was to engineer a high-output commercial kitchen and a luxury front-of-house experience within a constrained mall unit. GDS spearheaded the comprehensive design and permit documentation, coordinating across multiple disciplines to ensure a seamless integration into the Westfarms Mall infrastructure.

The design intervention focused on a "Precision Hospitality" strategy:

    • Space Optimization: Every inch of the 1,254 SF floor plan was programmed for efficiency. We designed a high-density "Back of House" featuring specialized baking equipment, walk-in refrigeration, and advanced ventilation, while maintaining a fluid, open-concept "Front of House" for customer service and seating.

    • Brand-Centric Interior Design: The storefront and service counter were engineered to act as a visual anchor. Utilizing premium finishes and custom lighting layouts, the design mirrors the artisanal quality of the café’s offerings, creating a high-end atmosphere that encourages lingering in a traditionally fast-paced environment.

    • Complex MEP Coordination: Fitting a full-service kitchen into a retail shell required intensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering. The design includes specialized grease waste management, dedicated high-voltage circuits for pastry ovens, and a fire suppression system fully integrated with the mall’s central safety grid.

    • Technical Performance & Compliance: The permit sets detailed strict adherence to CT State Building Codes and ADA accessibility standards. From the non-slip flooring specifications in the prep zones to the precise counter heights for inclusive service, every detail was reviewed to ensure a durable, safe, and code-compliant commercial environment.

The result is a chic, high-performance café that proves even a compact footprint can deliver a world-class hospitality experience.
