A Legacy of Craft and Mountain Resilience
The architectural challenge for this project centered on creating a high-performance residential footprint that maintained a sense of proportion and contextual harmony within its Berkshires neighborhood. GDS provided the comprehensive design and structural coordination, navigating complex topographical grading to realize a home that is as structurally sound as it is aesthetically elevated.
The design intervention utilized a "Site-Responsive" framework to realize the vision:
Structural Innovation: The project features a robust structural design utilizing LVL framing and steel reinforcements to support large-span openings. This engineering allows for a soaring, column-free Great Room that invites natural light and maximizes the surrounding landscape views.
Topographical Integration: A meticulous site plan ensures the residence sits naturally within the sloping landscape. Our team coordinated complex grading, drainage, and a precision-poured 3,000 PSI concrete foundation to support a sustainable and resilient exterior environment.
Architectural Articulation: The envelope utilizes a sophisticated palette of vertical and horizontal siding paired with black-frame contemporary window configurations. This provides a striking, modern silhouette that remains anchored in the local materiality of Western Massachusetts.
Technical Rigor: From the detailed shear wall schedules to the reflected ceiling plans, the "Final CD" set ensured every element was documented for seamless construction.
The result is a landmark residence where invisible engineering supports a grand architectural ambition.
