The Evolution of the Modern Farmhouse
The architectural challenge for this project was to engineer a massive, high-utility footprint that retained the intimate, approachable feel of a traditional farmhouse. GDS led the comprehensive design and documentation, navigating complex zoning requirements (SRAA Zone) to deliver a three-story sanctuary designed for long-term family flexibility.
The design intervention focused on a "Zoned Multi-Generational" strategy:
The Main Level Hub: We engineered a 2,622 SF open-concept social core, featuring a professional-grade kitchen with a butler’s pantry and a formal dining room. The layout provides fluid access to a rear deck and a specialized three-season porch, expanding the living area into the landscape.
Independent Living Integration: A critical component of the design is the self-contained in-law suite. Featuring its own private entrance, kitchenette, and side-yard patio, this wing offers total autonomy while remaining architecturally cohesive with the primary residence.
Lower Level Entertainment: The 2,380 SF walk-out basement was designed as a lifestyle destination, incorporating a rec room, guest suite, and den that open directly to a covered patio equipped with a full outdoor kitchen.
Technical Performance & Compliance: The Permit Drawings detail a high-performance building envelope, including R-21 closed-cell spray foam insulation and a sophisticated structural framing plan. Every square inch was reviewed against the 9th Edition 780 CMR code to ensure a safe, energy-efficient, and permitted build.
The result is a landmark Canton estate that balances grand architectural ambition with the specific, nuanced needs of modern multi-generational living.
