Modernizing Tradition with Compassionate Design
The architectural challenge for this project involved a sophisticated "Facade and Bathroom Renovation" that balanced the building's historic character with 21st-century accessibility standards. The project required a meticulous reconfiguration of the 3,156-square-foot ground floor to improve guest circulation and life safety.
The design intervention focused on a "Compliance-First" modernization strategy:
Enhanced Guest Circulation: GDS reimagined the flow of the 642-square-foot foyer, creating a central hub that provides clear access to Service Room A (1,218 SF) and Service Room B (481 SF), accommodating a total occupant load of 291 people.
ADA Accessibility Upgrades: A primary focus of the renovation was the installation of new, fully accessible men’s and women’s restrooms. These facilities were engineered to meet 521 CMR (MA Architectural Access Board) regulations without compromising the building's interior gross area.
Life Safety & Egress Optimization: The Egress Plan integrated modern fire protection systems, including emergency battery packs, updated exit signage, and optimized travel distances to ensure the safety of all visitors.
Functional BOH Support: The layout integrates essential back-of-house zones, including a specialized prep room, consultation waiting area, and a secure carport/garage bay system for discreet operations.
The result is a revitalized community landmark that offers a dignified, safe, and accessible environment for Medfield families.
