  • Reimagining the Patient Experience

The architectural challenge for this project involved the modernization of a functioning healthcare environment, requiring a design that could improve social connectivity without disrupting essential operations. GDS focused on a "De-institutionalization" strategy, stripping away barriers to create a space that feels more like a residential community than a clinical facility.

The design intervention focused on three key areas of impact:

    • Communal Expansion: We significantly increased the volume of the primary dining area by removing traditional doorway and sidelight barriers, allowing for a more inclusive and accessible social hub for residents.

    • Adaptive Reuse of Utility Space: In a strategic move to maximize the building’s footprint, underutilized storage areas were fully refinished and converted into a vibrant new patient lounge, providing a secondary destination for relaxation and family visits.

    • Studio Modernization: Beyond the communal zones, the project included a top-to-bottom refresh of patient studios, integrating new high-durability flooring and a refined color palette designed to improve cognitive comfort and aesthetic appeal.

The result is a revitalized interior that honors the dignity of its residents while providing a high-performance framework for modern caregiving.
