Modernizing the Roadside Landmark
The architectural challenge for this project centered on the total revitalization of an established building to support a contemporary restaurant concept. GDS served as the primary architectural strategist, coordinating a complex renovation that expanded the building's utility while significantly elevating its aesthetic presence in the Bellingham market.
The design intervention focused on a "Hospitality-First" modernization:
Interior Reconfiguration: GDS reimagined the interior floor plan to optimize guest flow and operational efficiency. The scope included a grand new bar area, refreshed dining zones, and the integration of custom millwork designed to ground the brand in a sense of craft and warmth.
Exterior Identity & Patio: The project extended beyond the four walls with a complete facade refresh and the addition of a new outdoor patio. This expansion was engineered to maximize seasonal seating capacity while creating a strong, modern visual anchor on Mendon Street.
Technical & Code Compliance: The Construction Set involved meticulous coordination of life safety, egress, and full ADA accessibility. Our team provided the detailed documentation necessary to navigate local building codes and secure the permits required for a high-occupancy assembly space.
Collaborative Oversight: Throughout the construction phase, GDS maintained rigorous coordination with the general contractor and consultants to ensure that the final built details – from the lighting schedules to the restroom upgrades – stayed true to the original design intent.
The result is a premier dining destination that anchors Bellingham with a bold, contemporary presence, offering a refined social environment for the region.
