Integration & Modern Expansion
The architectural challenge for this project centered on expanding an existing residential footprint while maintaining the integrity of its traditional character. The project required a highly coordinated effort, beginning with a full architectural survey of the existing elevations and floor plans to serve as the foundation for complex structural and land-use planning.
The design intervention focused on replacing an underutilized rear patio with a high-performance two-story wing:
Spatial Reconfiguration: The ground floor was updated with a "Grand Great Room," utilizing minor modifications to the original layout to improve circulation and create a natural connection to the new wing.
Elevated Private Living: The second floor was reimagined to house a luxury primary suite and an additional bedroom, effectively doubling the home's private living quarters.
Architectural Anchor: A standout feature of the addition is the two-story private library, which serves as a vertical focal point and brings a sense of refined academic luxury to the residence.
Technical Coordination: The Permit Set involved detailed collaboration with structural engineers and land surveyors to manage zoning setbacks and ensure compliance with the 9th Edition Massachusetts State Building Code and Stretch Energy Code (IECC 2021).
The result is a thoughtful expansion that provides the homeowners with modern amenities and significantly increased living space without losing the intimate feel of their historic Medway neighborhood.
