The Art of Adaptive Restoration
The architectural challenge at this property was to execute a total exterior transformation and interior modernization without altering the home's foundational character. GDS implemented a "Surgical Renovation" strategy, coordinating complex permit requirements with a highly curated aesthetic vision to update the home’s performance and curb appeal simultaneously.
The design intervention utilized a "Site-Responsive" framework to realize the vision:
Envelope Modernization: The project involved a complete exterior overhaul, applying premium new siding and refined trim profiles across the entire house and garage. Existing windows were replaced with high-performance units, and deck railings were updated to provide a more sophisticated, transparent connection to the Cohasset landscape.
The Reimagined Culinary Core: The interior scope focused on a full kitchen renovation, optimizing the layout for professional-grade utility. Strategic millwork was integrated throughout the main level to provide cohesive storage solutions and a sense of "built-in" permanence.
Structural & Regulatory Rigor: Adhering to the 9th Edition 780 CMR (Massachusetts State Building Code), the project underwent a thorough review of existing conditions. From the 3,000 PSI concrete foundation details to the specialized shear wall schedules, every technical element was documented to ensure the renovation exceeded modern safety and energy standards.
The result is a landmark Cohasset residence where heritage and high-performance engineering work in tandem. By honoring the original massing while stripping back the dated layers, we provided the clients with a "new" home that feels deeply rooted in its environment.
