The Precision of Artisanal Retail
The architectural challenge for Nona’s Homemade was to engineer a high-output production facility within a compact retail footprint without compromising the boutique customer experience. GDS led the comprehensive interior design and documentation, managing complex health department standards and MEP coordination to deliver a seamless, permit-ready environment.
The design intervention focused on a "Service-First Flow" strategy:
Optimized Production Core: We engineered a specialized kitchen layout featuring custom-specified dipping cabinets, walk-in refrigeration, and high-capacity wash stations. The floor plan was meticulously zoned to ensure staff efficiency during peak hours while maintaining strict sanitary separation.
Customer Experience Zone: The front-of-house design utilizes a strategic partition plan to guide foot traffic naturally from the entrance to the service counter. High-visibility glazing and a modern storefront layout were implemented to maximize natural light and create a transparent connection between the streetscape and the artisanal process inside.
Adaptive Structural Solutions: To accommodate the heavy-duty equipment required for ice cream production, the design included detailed demolition and partition plans that reinforced the existing shell. This involved careful coordination of floor drains, grease traps, and specialized electrical loads to support industrial-grade machinery.
Technical Performance & Compliance: The Permit Package includes detailed life safety plans and accessibility compliance (AAB/ADA), ensuring the space is inclusive for all patrons. Every element – from the non-slip flooring specifications to the emergency egress lighting – was reviewed against the 9th Edition 780 CMR and local Hingham bylaws to ensure a safe and durable commercial build.
The result is a vibrant retail landmark that combines the warmth of a family-owned brand with the rigorous technical standards of modern food service architecture.
