Ramp System & Lighting

Millis, MA 18,500 sq. ft.

  • Accessibility Rooted in Community

The architectural challenge for this project centered on integrating modern ADA compliance into a high-traffic, multi-use agricultural site. The project required a careful balance of structural engineering and site-specific egress planning to maintain the farm's welcoming atmosphere while meeting the technical demands of the Massachusetts Building Code.

The design intervention focused on high-utility accessibility:

    • ADA-Compliant Integration: GDS led the Construction Documentation for the installation of a new exterior ramp. The design was meticulously reviewed against 521 CMR standards to ensure the slope, handrails, and landing zones provide maximum safety and ease of use.

    • Structural & Survey Coordination: To anchor the new addition, our team coordinated extensively with structural and survey consultants, ensuring the ramp’s foundation and placement integrated perfectly with the farm’s unique topography.

    • Comprehensive Site Planning: The Permit Set extended beyond the ramp to include a full exterior lighting plan and updated egress maps, ensuring the farm remains safe and navigable during early evening harvests and seasonal events.

    • Regulatory Oversight: As part of our permitting services, GDS reviewed all applicable zoning and AHJ codes, managing the demolition scope and building construction details to ensure a streamlined approval process with the town of Millis.

The result is a more inclusive destination that honors the heritage of the farm while looking forward to a more accessible future for all visitors.
