Tangerini’s Spring Street Farm

Millis, MA 18,500 sq. ft.

  • A Vision for Agricultural Excellence

The project originated from a vision to transition the farm’s operations from an intertwined, high-traffic farm stand into a sophisticated, multi-use agricultural experience. The client sought to preserve the site’s rustic charm while introducing modern amenities – including a farm deck with a bar and a heavy timber structure for weddings – to anchor the farm’s future as a premier destination.

Our design intervention focused on reconciling the farm’s rustic heritage with high-performance infrastructure through a multi-phased Master Plan that prioritizes accessibility and operational efficiency:

    • Master Planning: GDS led the holistic site development strategy for long-term growth and operational efficiency.

    • Architectural Interventions: We designed a high-utility exterior ramp system and updated lighting.

    • Infrastructure Expansion: Our team created a conceptual design for a new heavy timber wedding structure and a farm deck with an integrated bar.

    • Technical documentation: Comprehensive “Final CD” sets included structural coordination, site-specific egress planning, and regulatory code reviews.

The primary challenge lay in balancing the farm’s “from-the-ground-up” rustic identity with the technical requirements of a high-density commercial site. The Master Plan had to resolve operational bottlenecks by relocating back-of-house activities away from public zones, all while ensuring modern safety standards were met within a rugged, existing topography,

Our team utilized a “Site-Responsive” framework to harmonize heritage with high performance:

    • Inclusive Accessibility: We engineered a custom ramp system that integrates seamlessly with the farm’s traditional aesthetic, ensuring the retail floor remains open to all visitors.

    • Operational Zoning: We reorganized site flow, moving heavy farm operations to the rear to create a more elevated, uninterrupted guest experience.

    • Technical Rigor: The project involved extensive coordination with structural and survey consultants to anchor new additions within the complex site grading and utility systems.

    • Atmospheric Resilience: A comprehensive lighting plan and egress map were developed to ensure the farm remains safe and welcoming during evening harvests and seasonal events.

The result is a farm poised to host a new generation of visitors in a space that honors its agricultural roots while embracing modern luxury and accessibility.
